Box Clever
I keep forgetting to blog.
I listen to so many podcasts, when I run in the morning usually, they all tell me the same thing...blog. Tell my story. I'm not sure my story is that interesting and I've avoided blogging because there's so many other people blogging, that my words don't really need to add to the chatter and excess information.
BUT
I think i've been turned, well a little anyway, I'll try and blog a bit more -which wouldn't be hard because currently we're doing almost none.
Anyway the point of the blog was to share the woes of our box development. We have this ace box, which everyone loves, and it has almost become as important as the shoes inside. I have grown to hate this box...it is expnsive to ship, it has plastic ends, you can't see the product inside, it's expensive to store because of the volumetric weight, it is an expensive box. Need I go on.
I've been trying to change it for the last 12 months and everytime I come up with a different idea -it seems I have only one goal-I am inadvertantly trying to create the worlds most expensive box. All the costings are more than the box we currently have -which is expensive.
So there lies the problem, I want to give our customers a box that isn't just a box, a box that does other stuff, like the tube box, so it doesn't get chucked away. BUT all the ideas I have are just as expensive as the box we have now (actually they are more expensive). I'm desperate to make the box a little cheaper, because we get squeezed on margin and reducing the box cost means we could gain a little margain back.
Our customers want a nice box, but not a price increase, they want it to be eco friendly and multipurpose. I want all these things too and for it to be smaller and cheaper. Plus it still needs to protect the product inside and be substantial enough for shipping. I am not sure I can win the box game. Something will have to give.
So what to do? Stick with the box I have grown to loathe or downgrade to a regular old brown shoe box. Neither of these are a happy ending for me or the customer.
I will go back to the drawing board. If I am nothing, I am determined.
